- Piers' Volunteer Story

Piers, our Founder, volunteers with Volunteer South as a Welfare Guardian, supporting vulnerable adults across Central Otago and Queenstown who are unable to make important decisions for themselves.

​

This role involves advocating for the individual's wellbeing, helping ensure their needs are met, and working alongside healthcare providers, social services, and family members to make decisions that protect their safety, dignity, and quality of life.

​

Piers was motivated to take on this responsibility after going through a similar process with his grandmother - ensuring she had the best possible care before passing away in 2020.

​

“Some people don’t have family or support networks to speak up for them. Being able to step in and make sure they are safe, respected, and properly cared for is incredibly important.”

​

Acting as a Welfare Guardian can involve difficult decisions and ongoing commitment, but Piers says the impact is deeply meaningful.

​

“It’s about making sure someone isn’t forgotten. Even small actions - attending appointments, checking in, or helping navigate services - can make a huge difference to someone’s life.”
